Lost Wax Casting

Lost Wax Casting is the process by which metal, usually bronze or brass, is cast from an artist's sculpture. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, and our foundry has its own specialist process. The process traditionally uses wax, but the term investment casting, recognizes that other materials besides wax can be used, including tallow, resin, tar, and textile. The cast that are used can be made of the wax model itself, the direct method; or of a wax copy of a model that does not necessarily need to be made from wax, known as the indirect method. The lost-wax process can be used with any material that can burn, melt, or evaporate to leave a mold cavity, and is ideally suited to create fine art sculptures.
